A visual study of the way we design and(re)present our identity and how this relates to the way we think about and judge ‘others’. Primary school children from two villages photographed their lifes to show it to the children in the other one. Both villages are small, situated in a remote area, close to a lake and poor by the country's standards. Kyabahinga is a south-west Ugandan village. Kreileroord is a village in the north-west of the Netherlands. After the photography sessions of the children Andrea organized a school trip with each group of children. On both trips a museum that showed the history of the country was visited. The trips and the way history is represented in these museums, was documented by her. Edirisa supported the realisation of this project in Uganda.

" In search of a better life and more opportunities, you move away. You leave everything you know behind. Over the ocean to another continent. That's where you settle.
What do you need so you still understand who you are? How do you model your surroundings and how do you make your new home your own..."
In the nineteen fifties, Dutch photographer Frits Gerritsen photographed a polder in Canada, inhabited with Dutch immigrants. In 2005 and 2006, Andrea again photographed that same polder, while collecting visual material of its former inhabitants: people who recorded their transition to a new and unknown life. From 1968 till 1983, a city garden in Berlin was photographed many times. Two proud owners recorded both the flora and their work on it. Today, the new owners of house and garden have reshaped it with their own ideas about what a garden should be. Every season for eighteen months Andrea photographed the way the garden developed, telling a story about city dwellers changing ideas about the nature behind their kitchen door.

A striking portrait of the differences and similarities between two rural communities: St. Odiliënberg and Kreileroord. The first historical, the second designed on a 20th century drawingboard. Historical material and photo's by Andrea show how environment, tradition and rituals shape the life in small communities in The Netherlands. Check out the books
